You know what I like about New York City waitstaff? They don't try to be your "pal," or use pat cliches like "I'll be taking care of you tonight." Unlike in other a cities, waitstaff in NYC will generally bring you your food, answer your questions about the menu, and keep your water glass refilled with a minimum of fuss.

They are invisible unless you need them for some specific reason. I miss living in New York because most other places, the help is way too over-solicitous as a means to mask their incompetence. So what if you could be construed as rude. You could be comic the insult dog if you made my meal run smoothly.

NYC waiters do that more often than most of their American counterparts.
